Dog Biscuits!

Cheese & Bacon

When I was a kid, we had a Keeshond named Tatjana. She was an awesome dog and we made her dog biscuits. It might have been an early indication of my love for scratch cooking...

Recently, my Mom sent me a copy of the recipes so I could bake for my Sam. I decided to break them out for Christmas and create treats for all the dogs in my life this year. I baked for 5. I tweaked the recipes, of course...

Bacon, Cheese & Garlic Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1 1/4 c cheese (I used shredded cheddar)
1/2 c bacon grease (we usually have a container in the fridge)
1 garlic clove, crushed

Cream the cheese with the bacon grease, garlic and flour. Add milk to form a ball. Chill for half an hour. Roll out to about 1/4-1/2 inch thick, cut and bake at 375 (on a parchment lined sheet) for 15 minutes or slightly brown and firm.

I also made some whole wheat and molasses stars for my furry friends:

2 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1/4 c oatmeal
1/4 c milk
1 clove garlic, crushed
4 T butter
1 egg, beaten
1 T molasses

Combine flour, oats, garlic. Cut in butter. Stir in egg, molasses and milk. Add enough water to form a ball. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick, cut and bake at 375 (on a parchment lined sheet) for 15 minutes or slightly brown and firm.

I have to say...the little cookie cutters are a bit labor intensive...but made the biscuits super precious! When I was a kid we had a bone shaped cookie cutter...but those remain with my Mom for safe keeping, along with the original recipe.

Sam and the gang are pretty lucky puppies...
